![]() As part of Mark's project, local students at the Richard Allen Preparatory Charter School received the opportunity to get involved in this historical project. On November 5th, 2007, Kara Fisher and her 6th grade science students welcomed Bartram's project staff Julie Courtney and Melanie Snyder into their classroom for a special, inspired art project. For this art assignment, the students were given a 15-minute introduction to Mark Dion, then were put into groups to create their own artwork based on the same sense of cataloging and collecting that Mark Dion uses. The materials they used to create their project were similar to that Mark might pack for his travels. The materials included pencils, paintbrushes, maps, seeds and pods, scissors, wire, stamps, etc. An important project on many levels, this opportunity was particularly special to the students because the Richard Allen Preparatory Charter School does not have an art program at the moment, although they are hoping to institute one next year. So this workshop was just one of few, if not the only, art projects children were able to do this year. Here's what they put together for Mark:
